AUBURN — The Eckhart Public Library will offer free “Computer Savvy Seniors” classes using wireless laptops beginning Sept. 10. Bobbie Lee, children’s assistant at the library, is the instructor for this four-week course.

“Computer Savvy Seniors” uses a manual that features a unique curriculum for the over-55 computer novice. The class allows students to explore the Windows environment and removes the “mystery” surrounding computers for senior users, Lee said.

The class is slow-paced with lots of review. Specific topics covered include: hardware and software components of desktop and laptop computers; identification of desktop icons, shortcuts, folders and files; the taskbar and its uses; how to work with Windows; using your mouse; keyboarding and beyond; keyboard moves and shortcuts for beginners; how to work with files and folders; basic word processing techniques; and utilizing Internet search engines for research.

The instruction manual offers take-home exercises and a final class evaluation. Manuals cost $20 each.

The library began using “Computer Savvy Seniors” in early 2005.

Students’ feedback has been positive, Lee said.

“I knew nothing about computers when I started this class,” said former student Ramoes Arnold. “I came out of it learning quite a bit about how to do different things on the computer.”

“I learned a lot and it was a lot fun,” said Lori Scroggins. “It was very useful information, and I am still using it even though it has been months since the class.”

“Computer Savvy Seniors” was developed in 1999 by Patti Hammerle of Brownsburg Public Library. Libraries in seven states now use Hammerle’s U-Can Manuals. Eckhart Public Library is proud to be in this group, Lee said.

The laptops for this class were purchased with a grant from the Indiana State Library and instruction is underwritten by Noble REMC Round-Up Trust and Friends of Eckhart Public Library.

The next session of classes begins Sept. 10 with a two-hour workshop at the William H. Willennar Genealogy Center, 700 S. Jackson St., from 10 a.m. to noon. Registration is required. Sign up at the reference desk at the Eckhart Public Library or call 925-2414.
